Remember, remember the 5th of November
Gunpowder, treason, and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot!
(My kids have been singing this little ditty for weeks).
Last night we celebrated our first Guy Fawkes night in the UK. We got together with friends and watched the big neighborhood bonfire and fireworks show. We listened to backyard fireworks going off late into the night.
One of the fun things about living overseas is the chance to learn about different holidays and traditions and local culture. This celebration is so uniquely British, and we were glad to join in the fun.
It almost makes up for the fact that Halloween barely exists and, of course, there is no Thanksgiving here. I guess now it's full speed ahead to Christmas!
I just happened to be in the UK for Halloween this year in Liverpool and after hearing repeatedly from my husband that Halloween is an American holiday and not celebrated in the UK I was VERY surprised to find that Liverpool went crazy on Halloween! It's a college town so it was all the college kids dressed up and out at the bars, but it was SO FUN to see all the costumes that I was expecting to miss this year. No trick or treating or Halloween decorations like they do in the US, but the 20 somethings were definitely into it.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter's school had a Halloween Disco, complete with costumes, a DJ playing spooky music like "Thriller" and typical Harvest Party games like bowling and bobbing for apples. I actually prefer less of the Halloween decorations and gore, so it was just the right amount to devote an evening to the celebration and be done with it. We were unable to celebrate Bonfire Night this year, but it seems like a fun holiday and we're hoping to be able to spend it outdoors with friends next year!
ReplyDeleteMy sister is studying at St Andrews,Scotland and was mentioning Guy Fawkes night. Since she was a lecturer back home, I believe she had to teach some lessons about him, hence it was pretty exciting for her to partake in the celebration!! She enjoyed the fire works immensely!!
ReplyDeleteApparently, when I accidentally abandon the internet, people's lives move on. You're here. I'm so thrilled for you and excited to read your adventures.
